Ontario School students receive A.L.i.C.E. training.

SRO Adam Gongwer has trained Ontario Students (6th-12th grades) in additional options and enhancements to the current lockdown procedure to an emergency. Once students are told to go into lockdown, the teacher will decide what additional options are available to utilize in order to protect their classroom or remove the students from danger. A.L.i.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Ontario Schools will now give plain language over the PA system to alert staff to the emergency. Teachers will continue to put their classroom into lockdown; however, the students will now decide whether to barricade the doorway, tie down the door handle, and gather items that can be used as weapons. Administrators will continually inform staff on the status of the emergency. Based on real-time information, staff will be able to choose from Counter strategies and Evacuation plans. Counter strategies include throwing objects at the intruder should they enter the room, attacking the attacker once they are distracted, fighting dirty if necessary and securing the weapon under a trash can once it is away from the attacker. Evacuation, if it can be done safely, includes running in a zig-zag pattern or getting out through a window. These are only a few of the strategies and additional tips are given to the students on how to respond to police once they are on scene. SRO Gongwer has already trained the administration, staff, bus drivers and also presented at the first open parent forum. He also presents the A.L.i.C.E. strategies to businesses and religious organizations.
